How to Activate Windows 11 After Reinstallation: A Simple Guide
Reinstalling Windows 11 on the same licensed device does not normally require buying Windows again. The important checks are the installed edition, the device's existing activation entitlement, its connection to the activation service and any significant hardware change.
Start on the Correct Activation Page
Open Settings > System > Activation. The older Update & Security > Activation path is for Windows 10. Read the activation state and any error code before entering a key or buying a licence.
Also check Settings > System > About for the edition. An entitlement for Home does not activate an existing Pro installation. If Pro was installed accidentally on a Home-licensed device, restore the correct edition or obtain the appropriate Pro entitlement through a supported route.
Digital Licence and Product Key Are Activation Methods
A digital licence associates activation with the device, and it may also be linked to a Microsoft account. A product key is a 25-character code used for activation. These are not a complete classification of transfer rights: OEM, retail and organizational licensing terms are separate from whether a digital licence or key is used.
If the same edition was previously activated on the same device with a digital licence, Microsoft permits reinstalling that edition without entering a product key. During setup, choose I don't have a product key when applicable, install the matching edition, connect to the internet and check activation afterward. Microsoft explains this in Activate Windows.
A Microsoft Account Can Help, but Does Not Create a Licence
Linking an existing digital licence to the correct Microsoft account helps with Microsoft's reactivation workflow after a significant hardware change. Simply signing in does not grant Home, Pro or another edition that the device is not licensed to use.
An unchanged device with an existing digital entitlement can reactivate without treating account sign-in as a universal activation prerequisite. Conversely, being listed in an account's devices is not by itself proof that a transferable licence exists.
After a Motherboard or Other Significant Change
On an unactivated installation, open Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot with an administrator account. If offered, choose I changed hardware on this device recently, sign into the account previously linked to the digital licence and select the appropriate device.
The installed edition must match the entitlement, and reactivation depends on the applicable licence and hardware circumstances. A motherboard replacement is a common significant change; replacing a storage drive alone does not automatically mean a new Windows licence is required. Follow Microsoft's hardware-change reactivation guide or the PC manufacturer's repair guidance.
Do not assume every hardware change requires phone activation, or that a troubleshooter can override licence transfer terms. If the supported workflow fails, keep the exact error and contact the appropriate support channel.
Enter a Product Key When It Applies
On System > Activation, choose Change product key, enter the legitimate key and follow the prompts. A key must be appropriate for the product and intended activation or edition-upgrade path.
A valid Pro key can intentionally upgrade an activated Home installation through Microsoft's supported Change product key workflow. Therefore, “never enter a Pro key on Home” is too broad. A Home key, however, does not activate Pro. See Microsoft's Home-to-Pro instructions.
Diagnose an Error Before Purchasing Again
Check internet connectivity, the system date/time, the installed edition and whether the activation service or organization reports a specific issue. Use Microsoft's activation-error guidance for the actual code.
If Windows reports an organizational activation service such as KMS, contact that organization's administrator. Do not point a personal PC at an arbitrary public activation server or install an activator script. An organization-issued key is not automatically a transferable personal licence.
Understand What an Activation Check Proves
The Activation page is the main place to check current state. The slmgr /xpr command can report activation expiration status, but “permanently activated” is not independent proof of the licence's source, authenticity or transfer rights.
Keep purchase records and relevant licence information securely. Microsoft's licence terms distinguish authorized licensing from successful activation. Do not publish your full product key when requesting help.
For an ordinary reinstall, check the matching edition and existing entitlement first, then use the supported reactivation or key-entry process. Buy a new licence only after establishing that the device lacks the entitlement needed for the installation you intend to use.
