Change How Many Files Open with Right Click in Windows 11 Fast

Share

Opening many selected files from File Explorer involves two separate questions: whether the context-menu command is available, and how the receiving application handles the files. A registry threshold can affect some classic commands, but it is not a universal queue or a limit on the number of application windows.

Why Multi-File Open Behavior Varies

Windows does not always launch one independent application process for every selected file. A program can receive multiple items, reuse a running instance, open tabs, or create separate windows, depending on its implementation and settings.

Microsoft's verb selection model documentation distinguishes Single, Document, and Player models. Commands can disappear when a selection exceeds the model's supported limits. Mixed file types may also lack a shared command.

Therefore, a missing Open command for a large selection is not automatically corruption, and selecting 100 images does not guarantee 100 Photos windows. Switching to another viewer does not guarantee that those files become tabs.

Check the Symptom Before Changing Settings

Try a few noncritical files of the same type. Note whether Open is absent, only some files open, or too many windows appear. Confirm the default application for that extension under Settings > Apps > Default apps.

On Windows 11, check Show more options for classic context-menu commands. Showing the classic menu does not itself increase selection limits or change the application's document-handling model.

If the goal is fewer windows, check the application's own tabs, single-instance, playlist, or folder-browsing options. Use its supported Open dialog or folder browser for large collections. Test with a small batch before trying hundreds of files.

A Registry Threshold for Some Classic Commands

Microsoft documents a default 15-item threshold for certain Open, Print, and Edit commands in its context-menu troubleshooting article.

The per-user DWORD (32-bit) value is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
MultipleInvokePromptMinimum

If you choose to test it, record whether the value already exists and its type/data, export the relevant key, then use Registry Editor to create or edit that exact value in the intended account. Select Decimal and use a modest threshold above the batch size you intend to test. Sign out and back in to apply it.

Microsoft gives 16 special menu-display behavior; do not describe it as reliably allowing unlimited document opening. The article is historically scoped to Windows 10, so test the specific classic command on your Windows 11 build and application.

Restore the recorded original value afterward if needed, or delete only the value you created when it was originally absent. An exported key is not a complete system backup.

This setting does not force every application to accept a large selection, queue documents, or cap concurrent windows.

If You Want to Open Fewer Files at Once

Select smaller batches manually or use an application with a supported batch workflow. Changing the threshold is not a scheduler that opens the first ten files, waits for them to close, and then proceeds.

Likewise, a script with a delay between launch requests does not necessarily limit active windows: the application may reuse a process, return control immediately, or keep documents open. A reliable queue needs application-aware behavior and explicit testing.

Avoid unnecessary app changes solely because of an unverified promise about tabs. For example, IrfanView should not be described as automatically turning 100 selected photos into 100 tabs. Product capabilities, licensing, and multi-file behavior need to be checked for the installed version.

Shell Extensions Are a Separate Issue

Removing or disabling context-menu extensions is not a general method for limiting how many selected files the ordinary Open command processes. A duplicate-looking entry alone does not prove that Windows launches duplicate applications.

If a specific extension causes a documented crash or malfunction, use its vendor's supported removal or troubleshooting method and record what you changed. Do not broadly disable handlers or edit unrelated HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT entries to solve a selection-threshold issue.

Start by identifying the command, file type, selection size, and receiving app. Then choose the relevant fix: test a documented classic-menu threshold for command visibility, or adjust the app's own workflow for document organization. Neither approach guarantees improved performance when opening an arbitrarily large batch.
