A full-screen screenshot captures the visible desktop. It is different from a scrolling screenshot of an entire webpage. On Windows 11, choose the shortcut according to whether you want a saved file, a clipboard image or Snipping Tool's editing options.

### Save the Desktop Directly

Press **Windows + PrtScn** on a supported keyboard. Windows normally saves a PNG in **Pictures > Screenshots**. On a multi-monitor desktop, a full-desktop capture can include more than one display.

The screen may briefly dim, but the absence of that animation does not prove failure. Check the saved image. If Pictures is redirected or backed up with OneDrive, use its actual File Explorer location rather than assuming a fixed local folder path.

### Check What Print Screen Does on Your PC

Pressing **PrtScn** alone can open the capture overlay when the Windows option to use Print Screen for screen capture is enabled. Check **Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard** for that setting.

With that option off, the traditional Print Screen action copies the desktop image to the clipboard. Open Paint or another image-capable app and press **Ctrl + V**, then save it. Do not assume a file has been created merely because an image is on the clipboard.

Use **Alt + PrtScn** for the active window rather than the entire desktop. This also differs from capturing just a browser tab's complete scrolling page. Microsoft explains the [window and screen clipboard methods](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/copy-the-window-or-screen-contents?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### Use Snipping Tool for a Full-Screen Capture

Press **Windows + Shift + S** and select **Full-screen** in the capture overlay, rather than leaving it in rectangular selection mode. Open the capture notification if you want to review or mark up the result in Snipping Tool.

Current Snipping Tool versions can automatically save screenshots depending on the app's settings. Check its screenshot-saving option and destination instead of assuming every capture is clipboard-only. Use **Save as** when you need a specific filename or folder. Microsoft's [Snipping Tool guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots?ref=elevendecoded.com) describes the available modes and controls.

### If the Keyboard Shortcut Does Not Work

Some laptops share Print Screen with another function and require **Fn**, such as **Fn + Windows + PrtScn**. The exact combination depends on the keyboard and Fn-lock configuration; check the manufacturer's layout.

You can also open Snipping Tool from Start and choose a capture mode there. On supported hardware without a Print Screen key, Microsoft documents **Fn + Windows + Spacebar** as an alternative in its [Print Screen shortcut guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcut-for-print-screen-601210c0-b3a9-7b58-bc40-bae4dcf5f108?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### If You Cannot Find the Image

First identify which method you used. A traditional clipboard capture needs pasting and saving, while Windows + PrtScn normally creates a file. Snipping Tool follows its own saving settings.

Open the actual Pictures folder in File Explorer and check Screenshots, including its OneDrive location if applicable. For a clipboard capture, test pasting into Paint. If Windows reports a save or security error, investigate that exact message; do not disable antivirus or change folder permissions broadly.

### For a Whole Scrolling Webpage

In Microsoft Edge, press **Ctrl + Shift + S**, choose **Capture full page** when available, review the result and save it. That browser shortcut is different from Windows + Shift + S. Edge's [Screenshot feature](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/features/screenshot?ref=elevendecoded.com) can capture webpage content beyond the visible viewport; full-screen desktop shortcuts do not automatically stitch a scrolling page.

Review the captured area before sharing. Pick the method that matches the required content, then verify the actual image and save location rather than relying only on an animation or key press.
