Windows 11 version **25H2 became generally available on September 30, 2025**. The name refers to the second half of 2025, not a release that began in 2023\. Microsoft's [release information](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/windows11-release-information?ref=elevendecoded.com) records the dates and edition-specific servicing timelines.

As of October 22, 2026, 25H2 remains a supported release, while 26H2 is also available for eligible devices. Check the version offered to your PC and your edition's lifecycle rather than assuming every download still targets 25H2.

### What 25H2 Changes

25H2 shares a servicing foundation with 24H2 and includes features and fixes delivered through that release's cumulative updates. A version change does not mean every visible feature arrives at once: rollout, hardware, region, edition, applications, and management policy can affect availability.

Snap Layouts and File Explorer tabs existed before 25H2\. They can be useful Windows features, but they should not be presented as new inventions of this release. Likewise, the version number alone does not promise a faster PC or a particular firmware-security improvement.

Use Microsoft's [25H2 feature overview](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/whats-new-windows-11-version-25h2?ref=elevendecoded.com) to check a specific claimed change.

### Confirm the Starting Version and Upgrade Path

Run **winver** or open **Settings > System > About** and record the version, edition, and build.

For an eligible 24H2 installation, the 25H2 enablement package requires the documented prerequisite cumulative update. Microsoft's [KB5054156 guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/os/windows/docs/2025/02/kb5054156-feature-update-to-windows-11-version-25h2-by-using-an-enablement-package?ref=elevendecoded.com) specifies **KB5064081 or a later cumulative update**. This small enablement path is not the same as a full upgrade from every older Windows version.

If the machine already runs a later release, 25H2 is not an upgrade destination to apply indiscriminately.

### Check Hardware, Drivers, and Critical Applications

Verify full Windows 11 eligibility, including the exact supported CPU model, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, and display requirements. CPU speed and core count alone are not enough.

Read the PC manufacturer's support information and application vendors' compatibility notes. A Device Manager warning is useful evidence to investigate; a clean Device Manager view does not guarantee every component is upgrade-compatible.

Do not change firmware just because a general guide tells you to. If a supported configuration change is needed, back up data and encryption recovery keys first, use exact-model instructions, and avoid clearing the TPM or changing Legacy/CSM boot mode blindly.

### Verify Backups Before Installation

Check all relevant file locations and application exports. For cloud files, confirm upload has completed and inspect important files through the correct online account. A sync icon or a folder name alone is not a restore test.

Keep an independent copy of important data and verify representative files from the backup. Windows Backup preferences, cloud file synchronization, and a full system image are different forms of protection with different restore capabilities.

Save any BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key outside the PC and confirm you can access it after a restart.

### Install the Offered Version Deliberately

When Windows Update offers the intended upgrade, review compatibility notices, finish prerequisite updates, save work, and maintain power throughout installation. A 24H2-to-25H2 enablement package normally needs a restart; a full feature-upgrade workflow may restart several times.

Check the [25H2 release-health page](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-25h2?ref=elevendecoded.com) for applicable issues. A safeguard hold or management policy is not necessarily an installation malfunction.

Do not force a restart merely because progress appears unchanged for 30 minutes. Timing depends on the stage and hardware. Keep power connected, check for an actual error, and follow the relevant recovery guidance if the process genuinely fails.

Microsoft's current Installation Assistant targets the release on the [download page](https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11?ref=elevendecoded.com); it is not a selector that guarantees 25H2\. It is also an x64 tool, with separate guidance for Arm PCs.

### Investigate Slowdowns from Evidence

Indexing, app updates, and other background work can temporarily consume resources after an upgrade. Check Task Manager and update status, but do not impose an arbitrary 48-hour waiting period when there are repeated crashes, storage warnings, or another specific fault.

Record the symptoms, update/build, resource usage, and relevant errors. Review supported drivers and the known-issues page. If a clean boot is justified, follow Microsoft's procedure, preserve the original service/startup configuration, and restore it after testing.

The **Go back** option, where available, is time-limited—normally 10 days—and depends on retained recovery files. It is different from uninstalling a monthly quality update. Back up current work and check availability before relying on rollback.

### Do Not Remain on 22H2 Because It Seems Stable

Windows 11 22H2 is out of servicing for its editions as of this article's check date. The [Enterprise/Education end-of-updates notice](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/announcements/windows-11-22h2-end-of-updates-enterprise-education?ref=elevendecoded.com) records their October 14, 2025 endpoint; Home and Pro ended earlier.

A PC operating smoothly is not proof of current security-update coverage. Plan a supported migration appropriate to the hardware and applications, using the version Windows Update or your administrator offers.

Confirm the starting version, target, support status, backups, and compatibility before proceeding. If an attempt fails, retain the exact error and diagnose that failure instead of repeating generic firmware or cleanup steps.
