Easily Remove Microsoft Account from Windows 11 and Reclaim Control
Removing a Microsoft account from Windows 11 can mean changing your Windows sign-in, signing an app out, removing another user profile, or closing the online account. Choose the operation you actually need: their effects on local files and online services are different.
Keep Your Profile and Switch Windows Sign-In to Local
If you want to keep using the same Windows profile with local sign-in, you do not first need to create another administrator.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Choose Sign in with a local account instead when offered.
- Verify your identity and follow the username and password prompts.
- Select Sign out and finish, then test the new sign-in.
This supported conversion keeps the existing profile rather than creating an unrelated new one. Keep backups and a way to recover your local credentials. An Administrator label identifies privileges, not whether every account-linked app uses the same identity.
Remove an Account Used by Apps
Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts manages identities used by applications. An app-account entry in your new profile is not the old Windows user profile.
Sign out separately in OneDrive, Microsoft Store, Edge, Outlook, or other apps as needed. Some entries provide Remove; others require management through the app or the associated Windows sign-in. Removing one entry does not necessarily sign every application out.
A local Windows account can still use Microsoft services through individual app sign-ins. Windows Update does not inherently require changing Windows sign-in back to a Microsoft account.
Remove Another Windows User Profile
If you actually intend to remove another user from the PC, use a working administrator account and back up that user's needed data first.
Open Settings > Accounts > Other users, select the intended user, and inspect Account and data > Remove. This removes that user's sign-in and data from this device; it does not close the online Microsoft account. Read the deletion confirmation carefully. Do not describe this operation as preserving all local documents.
If a separate user is needed, Other users > Add account offers the local-account route through I don't have this person's sign-in information > Add a user without a Microsoft account. Grant administrator rights only when needed, and test access before removing another profile. A password is strongly advisable, but it is not what grants administrator membership.
Check Cloud Files, Licenses, and Encryption
Before unlinking OneDrive or deleting a profile, download required cloud-only files and verify a separate backup. Switching Windows sign-in does not automatically stop an independently signed-in OneDrive client.
Purchased apps and subscriptions retain their own account entitlements. Some need sign-in to install, purchase, or verify a license; it is inaccurate to say every Store app becomes unable to update without Microsoft-account Windows sign-in.
Check activation status before and after changes, and retain BitLocker recovery keys. An account association and an activation entitlement are related concepts, but merely changing sign-in is not the same operation as changing Windows edition or deleting the license.
Work or School Accounts Need Separate Care
Settings > Accounts > Access work or school is a separate organizational connection. Do not disconnect it merely to silence a password prompt on a managed PC. Follow your administrator's instructions because access, management, and organizational data can be affected.
Giving the PC to Someone Else
Creating a new local user and restarting does not erase saved passwords, tokens, browser data, or old files.
For a sale, gift, or recycling, back up first and follow Microsoft's device-transfer guidance. Reset this PC > Remove everything, with the appropriate drive-cleaning choice, is intended for removing personal files, apps, and settings before transfer. Check which drives are included and verify the reset completes. Remove the device from your Microsoft account afterward as directed.
Troubleshoot the Exact Account Type
If Remove is absent, identify whether you are looking at the current Windows sign-in, another user, an app identity, or an organization connection. Do not assume activation is blocking removal or that a restart clears all credentials.
To reconnect a local profile to Microsoft later, use Accounts > Your info > Sign in with a Microsoft account instead and follow the prompts. Applications may still need their own sign-ins. Closing the online Microsoft account is a separate action with wider consequences and is unnecessary merely to use local Windows sign-in.
