A Hyper-V VM that fails to start needs a different investigation from a running guest with no network access or a slow application. Record the exact error and time first, then check the relevant layer rather than reinstalling Hyper-V or removing other virtualization software immediately.

### Check the Edition and Host Prerequisites

The full Hyper-V feature requires a supported Windows edition and hardware. Windows Home does not provide the full Hyper-V role and Manager, although it can use Windows virtualization components for features such as WSL 2\. An active Microsoft hypervisor is therefore not proof that the full management feature is installed.

Check **Settings > System > About** for the edition. Task Manager's **Performance > CPU** page shows the firmware virtualization status. For a broader check, run:

```cmd
systeminfo.exe
```

Read the Hyper-V requirements near the end. If Windows reports that a hypervisor has been detected, the individual prerequisite checks may no longer be displayed; that message is not a failure. If firmware virtualization is disabled, follow the PC manufacturer's UEFI instructions.

An error from the old Get-WmiObject example is not a reliable hardware test. The earlier command used an obsolete namespace/class approach, and Get-WmiObject is not available in modern PowerShell 7\. Use Microsoft's [Hyper-V installation guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/get-started/Install-Hyper-V?ref=elevendecoded.com) and [virtualization instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/enable-virtualization-on-windows?ref=elevendecoded.com) instead.

### Confirm the Required Windows Feature

In **Turn Windows features on or off**, check Hyper-V and the platform/management components needed for your intended local host. A management-only installation is different from a functioning local hypervisor.

On a supported edition, Microsoft's documented administrator PowerShell command is:

```powershell
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All
```

Restart when requested. There is no general requirement to reboot twice. Do not enable every similarly named optional feature indiscriminately or try to force the full role onto Home using unofficial scripts.

### Follow the Startup Error

In Event Viewer, inspect **Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Hyper-V-VMMS** and **Hyper-V-Worker**, including their Admin logs where present. Match the event time and VM identifier to the failed attempt.

For a memory-allocation error, compare available host memory with the VM's Startup RAM and concurrent workloads. Dynamic Memory still needs sufficient startup resources. Leaving exactly 2 GB for the host is not a universal rule: Windows, applications and other VMs may need substantially more. Meet the guest's requirements while preserving host capacity.

A vCPU count is not a reservation of that many physical cores. There is no universal “four physical cores means at most three vCPUs” rule. Size processors for the workload and test host contention; see our [performance guide](https://elevendecoded.com/performance-optimization-hyper-v-windows-11).

### Diagnose Networking Separately

If the guest boots but cannot connect, check its selected virtual switch, virtual NIC state, IP address, gateway, DNS and firewall behavior. Distinguish the switch types:

- **External:** connects through a selected physical network adapter.
- **Internal:** connects VMs and the host; external access requires additional routing, NAT or sharing configuration.
- **Private:** connects VMs on that host without a host network connection.

Windows client's **Default Switch** is not simply an external switch. Replacing it with a plain internal switch does not automatically restore internet access. Changing an external switch can also interrupt host connectivity, so record the existing configuration first. Microsoft explains [switch types and creation](https://learn.microsoft.com/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/quick-start/connect-to-network?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### Keep Guest Components Updated Normally

Modern supported Windows guests receive integration-component updates through normal Windows servicing. Linux integration support generally follows the distribution's kernel and packages. Do not withhold routine security updates until a symptom appears or install an old integration-services ISO blindly.

Check the guest's supported update path and the relevant integration-service status when a specific feature fails. Clipboard and device redirection also depend on the connection mode and guest support; they are not all controlled by a single integration-service update. Microsoft's [integration-service management guide](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/manage/manage-hyper-v-integration-services?ref=elevendecoded.com) describes the components.

### Do Not Assume WSL or Docker Is a Competing Hypervisor

WSL 2 uses Microsoft's virtualization architecture, and Docker Desktop can use WSL 2 or Hyper-V backends. Their presence is not evidence that they have taken exclusive hardware access away from Hyper-V. They can still consume memory, CPU and networking resources, so compare behavior with their workloads stopped when appropriate.

Compatibility with VMware or VirtualBox depends on the product version and configured execution backend. Consult current vendor guidance before uninstalling software or disabling Windows security features. Docker documents its [Windows installation and backend options](https://docs.docker.com/desktop/setup/install/windows-install/?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### Use a Test VM Without Misdiagnosing It

If necessary, create a separate test VM with a supported guest image and enough resources for that guest. A 1 GB configuration is not a valid Windows 11 guest test. A successful test helps narrow the difference in configuration; it does not prove the original VM is damaged.

Before removing features or rebuilding a VM, back up its configuration and disks through supported tools. If Windows corruption is suspected, follow Microsoft's DISM-then-SFC repair instructions. Keep error codes and logs for the next support step rather than treating a reset as the default fix.
