Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 Pro involves two separate questions: whether the PC supports Windows 11, and whether your license covers the Pro edition. A Windows version upgrade does not automatically add Pro features to a Home license.

### Check Your PC’s Compatibility First

Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. Check the exact supported processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, memory, storage and other requirements. Secure Boot being off is not alone proof that an otherwise capable PC is ineligible. TPM may be firmware-based, such as Intel PTT or AMD fTPM; it need not be a separate module.

If a requirement fails, record the specific result and follow your PC manufacturer’s model-specific guidance. Do not clear the TPM or switch a Legacy installation to UEFI blindly. Firmware changes can affect startup and BitLocker recovery, so prepare backups and your recovery key first. Passing the hardware check also does not guarantee an immediate Windows Update offer: compatibility safeguards can still apply.

### Check Your Edition and Activation

In Windows 10, open **Settings > Update & Security > Activation**. Record the edition and activation status.

- An eligible, properly licensed Windows 10 Pro installation can take the supported Windows 11 Pro upgrade without buying a new Pro license merely for the version change.
- Windows 10 Home normally upgrades to Windows 11 Home. Moving to Pro is a separate paid edition upgrade unless you already have a valid applicable Pro entitlement.
- A product key, digital license and organizational licensing can involve different activation arrangements. Use Microsoft or an authorized source and check that the license fits your device and intended use.

### You Do Not Have to Buy Pro Before Moving to Windows 11

One supported route is to upgrade an activated Windows 10 Home PC to Windows 11 Home first, then use **Settings > System > Activation** to upgrade to Pro through Microsoft Store or **Change product key** with a valid applicable Pro key.

Alternatively, upgrade the current Windows 10 Home edition to Pro using a valid supported Windows 10 Pro upgrade entitlement and confirm activation, then perform the eligible Windows 11 Pro upgrade. Do not assume any key labeled Windows 11 Pro will necessarily perform every earlier-edition upgrade. Follow [Microsoft’s Home-to-Pro instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/deployment/install-upgrade/upgrade-windows-home-to-windows-pro?ref=elevendecoded.com) for the Windows version actually running.

### Back Up Before Starting

Copy important files to a separate location and verify that the backup opens. If using OneDrive, confirm the required folders and files have synced; it does not automatically cover every local file or installed application. Record application licenses and confirm access to the BitLocker recovery key.

A System Restore point is not a full image backup or a replacement for backing up personal files. Keep reliable power connected during installation. Do not routinely disable antivirus: resolve any specifically reported security-software incompatibility using the vendor’s supported guidance.

### Prefer the Supported Windows Update Offer

On Windows 10, check **Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update** and follow the Windows 11 upgrade offer when available. For a managed work or school PC, follow IT’s deployment plan.

Microsoft also supplies official installation tools at [Download Windows 11](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11?ref=elevendecoded.com). The Windows 11 Installation Assistant supports x64 PCs, not Arm PCs. Check its current prerequisites and do not use a manual installation to bypass an unresolved compatibility safeguard. Installation time varies with the computer, connection and required work; an hour is not a guarantee.

A supported in-place upgrade is designed to keep files and compatible apps. If using installation media for that purpose, start setup inside the running Windows installation and verify the retention choices before proceeding. Booting from USB for a clean installation has different data-loss consequences.

### Verify After the Upgrade

1. Check **Settings > System > About** for the installed edition and version.
2. Check **Settings > System > Activation** for activation. If it fails, record the exact error and use the relevant Activation troubleshooter rather than repeatedly entering unrelated keys.
3. Install applicable recommended updates through **Settings > Windows Update** and check important devices and applications.
4. Confirm encryption and recovery-key backup. Windows 11 Pro provides BitLocker management, while compatible Home devices can also support Device Encryption; upgrading editions does not by itself prove every drive is encrypted.

### If Your PC Cannot Upgrade

Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025\. Do not continue on an unsupported installation based on advice that this date is still in the future. Eligible consumer PCs enrolled in Microsoft’s Consumer ESU program can receive covered security updates through October 12, 2027; enrollment, eligibility and regional terms apply, and ESU does not restore full Windows support. Check [Microsoft’s current ESU information](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updates?ref=elevendecoded.com).

Plan supported hardware or another supported solution if Windows 11 eligibility cannot be resolved. Unsupported installation workarounds do not turn a PC into a supported Windows 11 device.
