Windows 11 version 25H2 is a feature release, but upgrading from 24H2 is different from performing a full operating-system upgrade. The two versions share a common servicing foundation, and many experiences associated with 25H2 had already been delivered to 24H2 through monthly updates. Do not assume every visible change first appeared only in 25H2.

### Understand the 24H2 Enablement Path

Microsoft provides enablement package **KB5054156** for eligible Windows 11 24H2 installations. Its documented prerequisite includes **KB5064081 or a later cumulative update**. The small package activates the version transition rather than reinstalling every Windows component. Other starting versions can require a full upgrade; the 24H2 enablement package is not a universal installer.

Windows 10 devices can upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 when the supported requirements, licensing and deployment conditions are met. The claim that every PC must already run Windows 11 21H2 or later is incorrect. Follow the supported Windows Update offer or the organization’s deployment procedure.

See [Microsoft’s 25H2 overview](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/whats-new-windows-11-version-25h2?ref=elevendecoded.com) and [enablement-package documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/servicing/os/windows/docs/2025/02/kb5054156-feature-update-to-windows-11-version-25h2-by-using-an-enablement-package?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### Separate Features from Hardware and Rollout Conditions

Microsoft documents features across 24H2 servicing and 25H2, including changes to management, accessibility and AI-assisted experiences. For example, AI actions in File Explorer have their own app, account, hardware and rollout conditions. Copilot+ PC capabilities are not granted to every existing PC just because its Windows version reads 25H2.

Likewise, a new version label is not a guarantee of faster applications, better battery life or a new taskbar feature on every device. Check the specific feature documentation and installed cumulative update, along with whether organizational policy controls availability.

### Check Readiness Without Blind Firmware Changes

Run PC Health Check when assessing Windows 11 eligibility. Confirm the exact supported processor, enabled TPM 2.0, UEFI with Secure Boot capability and other requirements. Secure Boot being off alone does not prove that an otherwise capable device fails the upgrade requirement.

Review the PC manufacturer’s support information, relevant drivers and critical applications. A yellow warning icon can indicate a device issue, but its absence is not a complete compatibility certification. Check [25H2 release health](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-25h2?ref=elevendecoded.com) for safeguards and known issues.

Back up important files and verify access to your BitLocker recovery key. Follow Setup’s free-space guidance: the required working space varies by starting version, installed components and update method. A fixed 20 GB minimum or 40 GB recommendation is not a universal requirement for every 25H2 path.

### Install Through the Appropriate Supported Offer

Use **Settings > Windows Update** for an applicable offer and keep reliable power connected. On a work or school device, follow IT policy. Do not use Installation Assistant to bypass an unresolved safeguard hold or organizational restriction; the Windows 11 Assistant is for supported x64 PCs, not Arm PCs, and the offered target version can change over time.

Keep antivirus active. Address any specifically identified security-product incompatibility through its vendor’s guidance rather than disabling protection for every upgrade. Review relevant recommended updates or OEM fixes instead of replacing every driver indiscriminately.

### If Installation Pauses or Fails

A progress percentage alone does not identify a driver fault. Allow the operation time and do not interrupt an active install merely because the percentage has not changed. Record any error, rollback code, update identity and build. Use Get Help’s Windows Update troubleshooter for an update failure and consult the relevant Setup logs or support guidance.

Do not open a setup command prompt and run DISM /Online as a generic response to a pause. In a recovery or setup environment, /Online refers to that running environment rather than automatically targeting the installed Windows copy. Similarly, do not run a full CHKDSK surface scan or uninstall graphics drivers in Safe Mode without evidence pointing to that action.

When Windows component corruption is actually suspected in a normally running Windows installation, follow Microsoft’s supported DISM/SFC procedure and review the results. These tools are not mandatory rituals after every successful feature update.

### Verify the Result and Recovery Options

After installation, check the edition, version and build using **winver** or **Settings > System > About**, then test important applications and devices. Confirm activation, encryption and backup status.

Recovery depends on the update method and retained files. A full feature upgrade may provide **Settings > System > Recovery > Go back**, normally for a limited period such as ten days, while an enablement-package transition can have different uninstall behavior. Do not promise that every 24H2-to-25H2 update has the same Go back option. Review the available supported recovery method before making changes.

Finally, check the actual lifecycle of your current edition and version before delaying. Older releases are not all supported for an automatic fixed number of months after the next release. In particular, 24H2 Home and Pro reached end of updates on October 13, 2026; choose an applicable supported release rather than postponing indefinitely.
