The old Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) setup path is no longer a current supported way to install Android apps on Windows 11\. Microsoft ended WSA support and Microsoft Store availability for WSA and the Amazon Appstore on March 5, 2025\. Updating the Store or running wsreset does not restore that retired service.

See [Microsoft’s retirement notice](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/mobileapps/manage-settings-for-mobile-apps-on-windows?ref=elevendecoded.com). Do not follow older instructions to search Microsoft Store for Amazon Appstore as a new setup procedure.

### Choose the Method That Matches Your Goal

There is no single replacement that runs every Android app identically. A native Windows app or the publisher’s web app may be the simplest option. Check the publisher’s official download page, required features and account synchronization before installing an Android environment.

If your goal specifically requires the Android version, distinguish these approaches:

| Approach | What it does | Important limitation |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Phone Link Apps | Accesses supported apps running on a compatible Android phone from the PC | Requires a supported phone and connection; not a local Android installation on Windows |
| Google Play Games on PC | Runs games available in Google’s supported PC catalog | Not the full Google Play app store or a general Android productivity-app installer |
| Android Studio Emulator | Provides Android virtual devices for development and testing | A developer workflow with its own resource and configuration requirements; not guaranteed to run every consumer app |

### Phone Link: Verify the Exact Phone and Feature

Phone Link’s messaging, calls, notifications, phone screen and Apps capabilities have different device requirements. Support for one feature does not establish support for all of them. Check [Microsoft’s supported-device information](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Apps/PhoneLink/supported-devices-for-phone-link-experiences?ref=elevendecoded.com) and [Apps setup guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/apps/phonelink/setting-up-apps-in-the-phone-link?ref=elevendecoded.com).

Use the official Phone Link and Link to Windows setup process. Review permissions before granting access to notifications, calls, photos, microphone or other data. The phone remains involved; this does not copy every mobile app into a self-contained Windows installation. Some apps, protected content and work-profile configurations may restrict access.

### Google Play Games: Check the Game Catalog

For supported mobile games, follow [Google’s PC requirements](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/11358071?ref=elevendecoded.com) and [installation instructions](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/11358888?ref=elevendecoded.com). Check both the PC and the specific game, along with regional and account availability.

Do not infer that a game being available on an Android phone means its PC version is available. This service is not a method for installing arbitrary messaging, banking or productivity APKs.

### Android Studio Emulator: Use the Developer Workflow

For building or testing an Android app, follow [Android’s emulator guide](https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator?ref=elevendecoded.com). Install supported Android Studio components and create an appropriate Android Virtual Device. Check the current Studio-plus-Emulator requirements rather than reusing WSA’s historical 8 GB requirement.

Hardware acceleration, graphics, virtual-device architecture and installed system image all affect behavior. An app may depend on Google services, DRM, device integrity, sensors or policies that an emulator does not satisfy. Download the development tools from Android’s official site and follow its current acceleration guidance instead of disabling Windows security protections generically.

### Permissions and Performance Depend on the Platform

Windows host permissions, Android guest permissions and Phone Link permissions are different controls. There is no universal current WSA Settings > App permissions page that configures all these alternatives.

Allow only the access needed for the intended task. Test a simple supported app or game before heavy multitasking. If performance is poor, inspect the workload, memory pressure, graphics configuration and the platform’s own diagnostics. More RAM does not fix every compatibility problem, and a phone-linking problem is not automatically a BIOS virtualization issue.

### If an App Does Not Work

Record the chosen platform, app/version, device model and exact error. Consult that platform’s official troubleshooting and the app publisher. Do not treat reinstalling the retired Amazon Appstore, downloading an old WSA bundle or changing firmware as a universal repair.

A supported native app, a compatible phone-linking feature, a supported game platform and a developer emulator solve different problems. Start by choosing the correct one, then follow its current instructions.
