There is no single current Windows 11 tool called “Windows Assistant” that performs every productivity task. Cortana, Microsoft Copilot, Voice access and Windows 11 Installation Assistant are different products or features. Choosing the right one avoids following settings that no longer exist.

### Cortana Has Been Retired

Microsoft retired the standalone Cortana experience in Windows in 2023\. Its [end-of-support notice](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/cortana/end-of-support-for-cortana?ref=elevendecoded.com) also describes the retirement of other Cortana experiences. Cortana is not a supported Windows 11 productivity assistant waiting for a microphone permission or taskbar toggle to be restored.

Do not follow older instructions to enable a Cortana taskbar switch, find “Cortana & Search” in Settings or turn on “Hey Cortana.” Reinstalling, resetting the app, signing out of Windows or creating a new profile will not bring the retired service back. Windows + C should not be presented as a current Cortana shortcut.

### Use Copilot for AI Assistance

Microsoft Copilot can help with questions, explanations and drafting. Open the installed Copilot app from Start, or use Microsoft's supported access method for the app and account you have. Availability, account requirements, shortcuts and features can vary with the app, region and organization policy.

The consumer Microsoft Copilot experience and Microsoft 365 Copilot are not interchangeable names for identical capabilities. Access to work files, email or organizational services depends on the product, permissions and any required licence. Do not assume that a general chat request automatically creates an Outlook event or reminder.

Microsoft's [Copilot on Windows guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-copilot/getting-started-with-copilot-on-windows?ref=elevendecoded.com) explains the current app experience. Review important answers before relying on them and confirm any requested action in the destination app. A generated plan is not proof that its tasks were scheduled.

### Use Voice Access to Operate the PC

For hands-free control such as opening applications, navigating windows and entering text, try **Settings > Accessibility > Speech > Voice access** on a supported Windows 11 version. Follow setup to download the required language model and select the microphone.

Voice access can operate without an internet connection after setup. It is a control-and-dictation feature rather than Cortana's old cloud assistant, so use its supported commands instead of expecting general questions or personal reminders to work automatically.

See Microsoft's [Voice access setup guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/voice-access/set-up-voice-access?ref=elevendecoded.com) and [command list](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/voice-access/voice-access-command-list?ref=elevendecoded.com). Language availability and some controls depend on the Windows version and device configuration.

### Use Voice Typing to Dictate into a Text Field

Click a text box and press **Windows + H** to start Windows voice typing where supported. Check the selected language and microphone if it does not recognize speech. Microsoft's standard voice typing feature uses online speech recognition and requires an internet connection; this differs from Voice access's local operation after setup.

Voice typing enters words into the active field. It does not turn every spoken sentence into a system command or scheduled task. Review the text before sending it. Microsoft documents [voice typing requirements and use](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/use-voice-typing-to-talk-instead-of-type-on-your-pc?ref=elevendecoded.com).

### Put Reminders in a Task or Calendar App

For a dependable task reminder, open Microsoft To Do, create a task and set **Remind me** to the intended date and time. A due date and a reminder are separate controls. Check that the task is saved and that the app's notifications are allowed.

For a meeting, create and verify the event in the calendar application you actually use. Do not treat a conversational reply from an assistant as confirmation that a reminder or event exists. Microsoft's [To Do reminder instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/todo/add-due-dates-and-reminders-in-microsoft-to-do?ref=elevendecoded.com) show the relevant controls.

### Installation Assistant Is an Upgrade Tool

Windows 11 Installation Assistant helps upgrade a compatible PC; it does not manage daily tasks, answer questions or replace Cortana. Microsoft recommends checking the upgrade offered through Windows Update first. See [ways to install Windows 11](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/install-upgrade/ways-to-install-windows-11?ref=elevendecoded.com) for that separate task.

### Start with One Real Task

Choose the task first: AI drafting, voice control, dictation, a reminder or an operating-system upgrade. Open the corresponding supported tool, make a small test and verify the result. This is more useful than trying to reactivate Cortana or assuming a universal productivity gain from enabling an assistant.
