Windows 12 release date and what you need to know before upgrading
As checked in October 2026, no official Windows 12 release date, installation download or final system requirements were verified in Microsoft's release and download sources reviewed for this article. The earlier late-2024 forecast was speculation and should not be used to plan an upgrade. Keep a supported Windows release maintained while watching Microsoft's official announcements. Images labeled Windows 12 are not evidence of a released product or confirmed interface.
When is Windows 12 coming out?
No confirmed date was found in the official sources reviewed. Microsoft's current release information identifies Windows 11 releases, including 25H2 and 26H2. Do not turn an old rumor or a pattern of previous releases into a promised Windows 12 launch month. Recheck the Windows blog and release information before making a purchase or migration decision.
What new features will Windows 12 bring?
A final Windows 12 feature list was not verified. Claims about its Start menu, boot speed, power efficiency, cloud integration or AI features remain unconfirmed unless Microsoft identifies them for a named release. Features announced for Windows 11 or a Windows Insider build should not automatically be relabeled as Windows 12 features. Concept videos and mockups are not official previews merely because they look plausible.
How does Windows 12 fit into Microsoft's update strategy?
Windows 11 uses release- and edition-specific servicing periods; it does not have one universal ten-year support promise followed by an automatic extended-support phase. A hypothetical successor would not by itself determine every Windows 11 installation's deadline. Use Microsoft's lifecycle table for the exact version and edition you run, and plan updates around that date.
Will my current PC be able to run Windows 12?
No verified final Windows 12 hardware requirements were found. Windows 11 compatibility does not establish eligibility for an unannounced successor. Do not treat 4 GB of RAM, TPM 2.0 or a 64-bit CPU as a confirmed Windows 12 specification. Microsoft's PC Health Check currently evaluates Windows 11 eligibility; it cannot certify hypothetical future requirements.
What are the common rumors about Windows 12 that aren’t true?
The release date, redesign, supported hardware, price and internet requirements all need official confirmation. An unsupported rumor cannot be declared false merely because its opposite sounds more likely. Distinguish 'not verified' from 'confirmed not to happen,' and check whether an announcement actually concerns Windows 11 rather than a successor.
How can I prepare for the Windows 12 upgrade?
Keep tested backups, account recovery information and a list of essential apps and peripherals. Maintain a supported version of your current OS and check its lifecycle now. If Microsoft announces a successor, review its published hardware requirements, app and driver compatibility, upgrade terms and known issues before installing. Waiting a fixed number of weeks does not guarantee that early problems are resolved.
Conclusion
Base current decisions on published support information and your real workload. Do not postpone necessary security maintenance indefinitely for an unverified Windows 12 date, or buy hardware on a promise of unconfirmed compatibility. Revisit a future upgrade when Microsoft provides concrete requirements and terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has Microsoft announced the exact Windows 12 release date?
No confirmed Windows 12 launch date was verified in the official sources reviewed in October 2026. The former late-2024 estimate was not a reliable official commitment.
Will Windows 12 be a free upgrade for current Windows 11 users?
No verified Windows 12 pricing or upgrade-eligibility policy was found. Earlier Windows upgrade offers do not guarantee the terms of a future product.

That cannot be established without official requirements. A working Windows 11 installation is not a Windows 12 compatibility certificate.
Will Windows 12 require a constant internet connection?
No verified final Windows 12 connectivity requirements were found. Do not promise offline operation or continuous connectivity requirements for an unconfirmed product specification.
What should I do to prepare for the Windows 12 upgrade?
Keep backups and your present OS supported, and follow official announcements. Check future hardware, app, driver and licensing requirements only when Microsoft actually publishes them.
